JPX RV WATER HEATER FLUSH KITS

The importance of annual water heater maintenance: Cleaning and Descaling your RV Water Heater will not only extend the life, improve performance, but it also sanitizes the water heater.

JPX RV made a tool to simplify this annual maintenance.

The following steps are how we do this. It is not intended as “How To Information”. Please do not attempt any of the steps below if you are not qualified to work on RV water systems.

1.Turn off the Water Heater, both Electric and LP.  Next run hot water from a faucet until the water heater tank has cooled down.

2.Turn off the water supply and release the pressure from both hot and cold-water systems.

3. Place the Water Heater into Winterize mode isolating it from the RV plumbing systems. Now open the P&T valve to allow air into water heater as the water drains out. Remove the drain plug or anode rod. ****Use Caution, this water could be Hot.****

4. Install the JPX Flush Kit into the drain hole. Open valve and install funnel. “Hand Tight Only”

5.Fill the water heater with 3% vinegar through the funnel. You will need the same quantity of 3% vinegar as the gallon size of your water heater. IE 6 Gallon Water Heater needs 6 gallons of 3% vinegar. Fill until liquid just starts to flow out of the P&T valve. Close P&T valve and the ball valve on the Flush Kit.

6. Allow system to set for 8 hours. More is ok. Overnight is what we usually do.

7. The water heater may build pressure from the vinegar reacting with the minerals in the tank. Use caution when opening the drain. Rotate the flush kit 180 degrees pointing downward and slowly open the ball valve on the flush kit and once pressure is released open the P&T valve to drain the water heater into a suitable container for disposal. This will depend on your local requirements if any.

7. After the 3% vinegar has been drained, refill with the same procedure until the water heater is full of fresh water and then drain. Do this twice and then return water heater to service by filling a third time and closing the P&T valve. You can then remove the flush kit and install the plug or anode rod. Water will drain from the tank but with the P&T closed, it will be minimal and allow for reinstallation of the drain plug or anode.
